First TX hantavirus case for 2014 recorded in the Texas Panhandle

According to High Plains Public Radio and the Texas Department of State Health Services, a Swisher County resident contracted hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Hantavirus is carried by rodents, and people are most prone to infection when dust is stirred up from rodent dwellings. It’s not contagious between people. The person has recovered from the infection. The disease is very rare, but it’s always good to know the precautions.
