Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter, the boxer originally from Clifton, New Jersey, was first immortalized in this song, and later in the movie “Hurricane,” which starred Denzel Washington. He spent 19 years in prison for the 1966 murder of three people for a crime he didn’t commit. His supposed partner in the crime was John Artis. This was one of the most famous racial profiling cases ever and it garnered worldwide attention. He was convicted twice, in 1967 and in 1976. He was released in 1985, finally after years of appeals and advocacy. He died peacefully in his sleep on April 20th. He was 76. More…

I learned every word to this song when I was 19. It was so perfect, such a cool song, and I loved it the first time I heard it.
