Emojis as a branch of cultural studies? O_o

When you think of cultural analysis, what pops into your head? For me, it’s Margaret Mead doing her ethnography of Samoa. But nowadays, people are studying little faces on screens. Are they modern glyphs? Are they a text of sorts to analyze en masse to see how they change over the years? Who knows what will be revealed about our culture?

Texts can be found anywhere. I came to believe that fashion was a text in that it revealed the mood and values of the times. So I had a vintage clothing store because it all fascinated me so much. I can only raise my eyebrows so much at the serious, intensive study of emoji. Who’s to say that they won’t be cultural artifacts someday? What if they’re displayed in a museum?
